Alan S Rector

August 16, 1932 — March 21, 2018

Alan S. Rector, age 85 passed away with his family surrounding him on Wednesday, March 21st at Geneva General Hospital. He was born August 16, 1932 in Penn Yan, NY to the late Arthur and Gladys (Ansley) Rector. After high school, Alan served his Country as a Corporal in the United States Marines Corps during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. On June 1,1957, Alan married the love of his life Esther. Alan and Esther owned and operated a 40 cow dairy farm — Rectorbrook Farm. In 1980, Alan decided to enter a different career and bought 53 acres of vineyards. Over the next 33 years, they grew and handpicked a wide variety of table grapes. He would travel throughout Central NY in the vanagan to different farmers markets in Oswego, Utica, Binghamton and Syracuse areas. They owned and operated the vineyard until 2013 where they retired and decided to make the move into the big Village of Penn Yan. During his retired years, he enjoyed going to the Moose on Thursday night to have dinner and play euchre. One of the major highlights of his retirement was participating in the Rochester Chapter Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C. in September 2016. Alan will be remembered for living life to the fullest as well as his strong family values. He enjoyed traveling to Florida during the winter months, square dancing at the Penn Yan Grange, cooking and barbecuing, playing cards and any social event where he got to tell someone a story about the good ol’ days. If you had time, Alan had a story or three to tell you. He also loved watching SU basketball and any MLB team that could beat the Yankees. Over the years he was a member of the Moose Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks Lodge, American Legion, Yates County Fair Board, Farm Bureau, and was a 4-H leader. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Esther Jean (McMaster) Rector; son Gregory (Donna) Rector, daughter Jeanne (Jeffrey Finger) DeWick; grandchildren, Kyle DeWick, Kari (Drew) Bezek, Steven (Linda) Rector, and Jeremy (Brittany Griffiths) Rector; great grandson, Chase Rector and Baby Bezek on the way; sister-in-laws Joyce (Lamphier) Rector and Shirley (McMaster) Sisson; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Janice (Rector) McClure, Richard and John Rector. Family, friends and others who knew Alan are invited to the Penn Yan United Methodist Church on Monday, March 26, 2018. Calling hours are from 10am to 12pm with the memorial service immediately following. The burial with full military honors will take place at Lakeview Cemetery for immediate family members only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Alan’s Memory to support future honor flights payable to American Legion in care of Lyons National Bank, 205 Liberty St., Penn Yan, NY 14527.
