Barbara J. Wager

Barbara J. Wager, age 93, passed away peacefully at home, with her family at her side, on Wednesday, August 17, 2022.

Family and friends are invited to a funeral mass at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 312 Liberty St., Penn Yan on Wednesday (August 24) at 10 a.m. The family will welcome friends and family for calling hours from 9:15 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the church. A private burial will be held in St. Michael's Cemetery.

A lifelong resident of Penn Yan, Barbara grew up working along side her parents Bernard and Mary, owners of Seward Ice Cream & Candy Shop in Penn Yan. It was here her love for hot fudge sundaes developed and in turn was passed on to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was truly happy spending time at home with her family. For nearly 40 years she found enjoyment working on the farm alongside her husband, Charles. She worked many hours in the apple packing and sales room operation as well as working out in the vineyards and orchards. When the grandchildren and great-grandchildren came to visit it was the highlight of her day. She enjoyed their company and listening to their stories as they grew and matured.

She was predeceased by her parents, Bernard and Mary (LaLonde) Hansen; her husband, Charles Wager; brother, Robert Hansen; and grandson, Bradley Wager.

She is survived by her sons, Donald Wager, Douglas Wager and Bernard (Roxanne) Wager; sisters-in-law, Mattie Hansen, Betty Babcock, and Loretta Tesch; grandchildren, Natalie (John) Onderdonk and Christopher (Elesha) Wager (and their mother, Susan Shackelford), Kimberly (Jeremy) Hughes, and Allison (Michael) Hiller; great-grandchildren, Mia Pashoukos, Ethan and Ryan Wager, Landon and Madelynn Hughes, and Ada Hiller; and several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Michael’s Church or St. Michael’s School in her memory.

The family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to the Finger Lakes Visiting Nurse Services, Ontario-Yates Hospice, and the doctors and nurses at the S&S Health Center and Geneva Medical Associates.
