David P. Blauvelt

October 4, 1956 — July 8, 2023

David Philip Blauvelt, 66 of Penn Yan, NY ended his 5-year battle with Glioblastoma Mulitforme on July 8, 2023.  He chose this day to honor his first grandson, Sweed David Nichols, who left us 8 years ago on this very day.

David was born on October 4, 1956, the son of Howard and Natalie Blauvelt of Johnson Ave. Penn Yan, NY; David is the oldest brother to Chris, Shawn, and Steve.  He attended Penn Yan Academy, graduating in 1974.  Upon graduation, he and his best friend Mike Dunning enlisted in the United States Air-Force.  He was stationed at Pope Air-Force Base, NC.  After his time in the Air Force he returned to Penn Yan, working a few little jobs before beginning his career with the Town of Milo.   David was a life member of Johnson-Costello Post 355, where he served as a Commander for many years.  He was instrumental in the building of the pavilion, the front deck, none of which could have been accomplished without the help of the many volunteers from his Legion Family.  His proudest accomplishment at the Post was the makeover of the lounge, and bragging that his brother Chris (the most talented cabinet maker) rebuilt the back bar.  He so enjoyed every minute he spent there discussing many issues with other patrons, the most heated discussion (politics) Dave the out-numbered Democrat.  In December of 1986 he married “the prettiest girl in the room” Roseann Ostroski. He was welcomed to the Ostroski, DeVita family, and introduced to pasta fagioli and perogies.

David is survived by his wife Roseann of Penn Yan. Daughters, Jessica (RJ) Metz of Jordan, Jillian (Nathan) Nichols of Penn Yan, grandchildren Evelyn & Waller Metz, Rorick & Reginald Nichols, mother Natalie Blauvelt and brothers Chris (Sharon), Shawn (Becki), and Steve Blauvelt all of Penn Yan, brother-in-law Joseph Ostroski also of Penn Yan, and a large extended family and many friends that he adored.

He was predeceased by his grandson Sweed David Nichols, father Howard Blauvelt, grandparents Dave & Ethel Blauvelt; Phil and Marie Gleason, In-laws Ernest and Diana Ostroski and “the other brother" Lawrence (Weasel) Wise.
