Edward W. Malone of Penn Yan, NY, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2025, two days before his 92nd birthday. He was born April 29, 1933 in Little Falls, NY, to the late Patrick E. Malone and Kathryn C. (Cheney) Malone.
Edward left high school to enter the service in 1951, enlisting in what was then the United States Army Air Corps which later became the United States Air Force. After serving in the Korean War as a mechanic he was honorably discharged in 1955 with the rank of Airman First Class. He then attended business school in Utica, NY, where he met Lois A. McKelvie. The two married in 1959. After marrying, Edward took a position with P&C Food Markets and he and Lois moved to Penn Yan and raised three children, in whom they instilled a love for camping, a commitment to service, and a love of laughter. Edward worked for P&C for thirty-nine years and became known locally to many shoppers as the white-haired “Mr. Ed.” After retirement, Edward and his wife supported many causes, including Churches in Action Food Pantry, Care Net of Penn Yan, Gideons International, and several other Christian ministries. Edward loved the homestead he and his wife transformed from a barren potato field at the time of purchase in 1969 to a yard full of apple trees, berries, rhubarb, and flower gardens that drew many neighborhood children for games of hide-and-seek when his kids were growing up. In addition to the beautiful area in which he lived, Edward also loved the Adirondacks and keeping fit. First and foremost, he loved his wife, children, and later, the many grandchildren that his kids and their spouses brought into his life. He was a loving father figure to many people outside of his family as well.
Edward is survived by his devoted children and their spouses, son Seth (Kirsta) Malone of Union Springs, NY; daughter Beth (Shawn Broome) Malone-Broome of Penn Yan, NY; and daughter Erin (Jason Vidas) Malone of La Farge, WI; niece Kristen Kendall; nephews Daren Kendall, Kevin Malone, and Marc Malone; great-nephew Dylan Kendall; great-niece Angie Moreno; grandchildren Ben Malone, Rachel (RJ) VanFleet, Skylar and McKelvie Jensen, Kelsey (Zachary) Knapton, Alyssa (Alface Quissimissee) Broome-Quissimissee, Logan and Ben Broome, and Hailie and Amber Wozny; and great-grandchildren Mia Knapton and Mateus Quissimissee – and “bonus” great-grandsons Ollie and Otto Davis—as well as many family friends and extended family members, including his special “bonus” daughter Christine Pullin. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years, his father and mother, his brothers Richard, William, and Edward (for whom he was a namesake) Malone, his sisters Helen Cogovan, Rheta Lipscomb, Catherine Walrath, and Alice Roy; and his sister- and brother-in-law Ruth and Fred Kendall.
Edward’s family would like to express the deepest gratitude to his special friend and caretaker Jaime McCormick who—along with devoted helpers of several years Scarlett, Julie, and Dawn— ensured that Edward could enjoy the last years of his life at home with dignity surrounded by the comfort and love of family and friends.
An outdoor memorial service and celebration of life is planned for both Edward and Lois Malone on July 27 at 2:00 pm at Beth and Shawn’s home in Penn Yan, NY. Burial will be made in Bellona Cemetery at a later date. The Weldon Funeral Home of Penn Yan is assisting the family. Memorial donations may be made to the non-profit Healing H’arts Equestrian Center, Inc. of Union Springs, NY, 13160.
