Erving H. Schroeder

Age 95, of Penn Yan, NY, passed away December 2, 2022.

Erving was born August 4, 1927, in Penn Yan, the son of the late Hiram and Helen (Nielsen) Schroeder. He graduated from Penn Yan Academy in 1945 and served active duty in the US Army from Sept 11, 1950 to Sept 10, 1952. He worked for Shay Gas and Oil and Suburban Propane as a service technician. After retirement in 1992, Erving was self -employed doing some plumbing and appliance repair part-time. He also enjoyed his time spent as a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer. Erving was a long-time member of the Penn Yan Moose Club and American Legion. Erving's hobbies included radio control model airplanes--building, flying, and repair when necessary due to pilot error. He enjoyed working with wood and always seemed to have a project in mind that he thought he needed to make. Erving enjoyed riding his scooter. He took part in many motorcycle benefit rides, claiming he could "keep up with the big boys". In the winter, he took a lot of pleasure in helping neighbors out with his snow blower. He often mentioned how lucky he was to have good neighbors. Erving was very fond of polka music and enjoyed square dancing in his younger years. He was always in search of new adventures.

He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Thelma (Covell) Schroeder; companion Hannah Johncox; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Ken Appleton; brothers, Leon and Paul Schroeder; and brothers-in-law Ernest, Henry, and Harold Covell. He is survived by two sons, Erv (Laurie) Schroeder, and Randy (Bonnie) Schroeder; grandchildren, Emily Bush, Michael (Janelle) Schroeder, and Kara (Tim) Gallagher; great-grandchildren, Mason and Lia Bush, and Connor Gallagher. Also, special friends, Sharon Gilman, Jennifer and Jeff Jensen, and Tim and Pam Donnells; sister-in-law Marilyn (Charles) Chambery; and several nieces and nephews.

Erving will be missed by many who knew him. In addition to his wonderful sense of humor he had the warmest smile, an open heart, and a kind soul.

The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Keuka Comfort Care Home for the wonderful care given to him during his stay there. Also, thank you to Ontario-Yates Hospice for their care and the We Honor Veterans ceremony.
