James (Jim) Francis Armstrong III
80, of Penn Yan, New York, died suddenly on May 4, 2025. Born on St. Patrick’s Day, 1945, in Penn Yan, Jim was the youngest child of the late Frances Grady Armstrong Barden and James F. Armstrong, Jr.
A graduate of Penn Yan Academy (1963) and Hobart College (1983), Jim led a varied and creative life. In his earlier years, he managed several Upstate New York bands—some of which achieved regional success and recorded albums—and worked as a trusted tour manager. A passionate keyboard player, Jim enjoyed making music with friends whenever the opportunity arose.
Jim later turned to teaching, first at Penn Yan Middle School, and then at Finger Lakes Community College’s Geneva campus, where he taught and tutored in English until health issues led to his retirement.
A published author, Jim penned several books, including two Finger Lakes-based fantasy-mystery novels, showcasing his imaginative storytelling and love of the region. He was a lifelong reader and swimmer, and above all, a gifted storyteller. Jim had a knack for drawing others in with vivid tales from his wide-ranging life experiences, often told with detail and humor.
Jim is lovingly remembered by his sister, Therese Armstrong Toole; his niece, Kelly E. Toole; his nephew, James Shannon Toole (Jennifer); and his cherished feline companion, Jazz.
A man of faith, Jim was a lifelong Catholic and found strength in his spiritual life. A memorial service will be held in August at Saint Michael’s Church in Penn Yan, with interment at Saint Michael’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Yates County. Weldon Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
