Loved Beyond Words and Missed Beyond Measure

Janice “Jannie” Marie McConnell, 74, of Penn Yan, NY, passed away peacefully at FF Thompson on April 5, 2023, with her daughter by her side.

To honor Jan’s wishes, there will be no funeral or services.  Jan lived to enjoy, and loved warm weather and sunshine; therefore, we will hold a Celebration of Life this upcoming August.  Those who would like to celebrate her life are invited to join the family for the celebration.  An announcement will be placed in local newspapers in advance.

Jan was born on August 2, 1948, in Watertown, NY to Fannie and Carl Hammond.  In 1961 Jan’s family moved to Penn Yan, NY.  She graduated from Penn Yan Academy in 1965.  Jan married her husband Dick on May 13, 1968, in Wellsboro, PA.

Jan leaves behind several people who love and miss her dearly.  She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Deena and Terry Conley, grandchildren Josh (Brianna) Conley and their daughter Anabella (Jannie’s Sweet Girl), Lora (Andy) Bennett and their children, Matt (Ashlie) VanDoren and their children, and Ryan (Sarah) VanDoren and their children; sister Bonnie (Dan) Hyatt, companion Mike Buell, loving in-laws, several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends and loved ones.

Jan is predeceased by her husband Dick, parents Fannie and Carl Hammond, brother Carl Hammond, and stepdaughter Lori McConnell.

Jan had a deep love of horses, and often spoke of the horses she and her sister Bonnie had as children.  She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and later in life enjoyed family vacations.

Jan worked hard all her life.  She was employed at Finger Lakes Health, working at Geneva General Hospital and the Surgery Center.  She prided herself on being independent and had a strong conviction that will be respected forever.  She was a strong fighter but thank God is no longer fighting cancer.
