Laura May Hammond
Age 96, passed away peacefully with family by her side on May 9, 2026. Laura was born in Dundee, NY, the daughter of Leon and Cora Hallenbeck. She married the love of her life, Amos Hammond on December 11, 1948. Together they built their life around family, hard work and the beauty of the Finger Lakes.
Following their marriage Laura worked alongside Amos managing their vineyards and helping operate the family farm. In addition to farming, Laura worked at Farm Family Ins. before she and Amos built and operated the Hammond Fruit Stand which she proudly managed for many years. After selling the family farm Laura returned to work at Seedway in Hall, NY before enjoying her second retirement.
After their retirement they split their time between NY and FL where they enjoyed their love of Finger Lakes wine with friends during their annual wine tasting parties in Florida. Laura loved sewing, gardening, golfing and playing cards with family and friends. Many family gatherings centered around her famous steamed pudding and euchre tournaments. Laura was an active 4-H volunteer and she and Amos were active members of the Farm Bureau and Grape Growers Association. They enjoyed traveling the US and Europe creating many wonderful memories.
Laura is survived by her children, Jean Murdock, Joan (Russ) Giesy, and Glenn (Val) Hammond. She was a loving grandmother to Julie Voak, Jewel (Claude) McRoberts, Jay (Sarah) Giesy, Jerri (Aaron) Jackson, Mark (James) Hammond, Jessica (Bill) Bacher, Christopher (Alexandra) Hammond, Erin (Brian) Cunningham, and a special friend Karen (Mike) Castner. She leaves behind 16 great grandchildren and 2 great grands. She was predeceased by her husband Amos Hammond, her children Lori and Wade Hammond, her parents Leon and Cora Hallenbeck, brothers Carl, Norman and Ralph and son-in-law Don Murdock and grandson Shawn Murdock.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bluff Point Methodist Church music program where Laura and Amos were members for many years or St. Marks Terrace where Laura resided following Amos' passing.
A memorial service will be held at Bluff Point Methodist Church Saturday, June 20, 2026 at 12:00 pm followed by a luncheon at the church. Weldon Funeral Home of Penn Yan is assisting the family.
