Norman Richard Hansen passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on July 14, 2026 in Himrod on Seneca Lake, NY, after living decades with heart challenges.

Norm was born on March 12, 1941 in Penn Yan, NY. He spent an adventurous childhood growing up in the Himrod Eagle Hotel and on Seneca Lake. He graduated from Dundee Central School, Class of ‘59. After his time at Mohawk Valley Community College and graduation from Bryant University, Norm served in the Navy, then the Naval Reserves.

Norm met his future bride Dianne on a blind date, and they married on August 8, 1970. They enjoyed many years of downhill skiing, boating and spending time on Seneca, and traveling out west and through Europe.

Norm cherished many long term friendships and some of his best memories were the “Wimpleton” tennis tournament, lumberjack contest, ski trips, and simply hanging out together.

Regular phone calls and snail mail from far away friends always brightened Norm's day.

Retired from a career in banking and finance, he enjoyed volunteering for Himrod Fire Department dinners and with the Grove Mount Cemetery.

While his illness kept him home bound much of the time, Norm took pride in perfecting his home, especially the lawn, trees and flowers. Movies after dinner entertained him, along with cooking shows, and watching his beloved Buffalo Bills.

In recent years, writing helped occupy his time and his mind. Proceeds from his two books, Rail Town, and Once Upon A Time In A Small Town: The Ashton Chronicles, are designated to local charitable organizations. Norm recently completed two unpublished works.

Norm is loved and will be deeply missed by his wife of 56 years, Dianne Campney Hansen; children, Scott Hansen and Kathy (Rich) Duell; grandchildren, Olivia Duell (Philip Newman), Mollie Duell (Sean O’Neill), Kate (Blake) Reichenbach, Lily (Drew) Daniel; sister Celeste (Tom) Myers; several great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Florence Green and Nelson E. Hansen.

Norm survived Rebel the dog, Squeaker the Guinea pig, several fish and umpteen cats. He leaves behind Milo, a brand new cat who has brought many cuddles to him and Dianne this summer, and who will continue to comfort the family.

Norm and his family would like to thank the UR LVAD Heart Team, and wonderful, dedicated nurses and staff of UR Hospice, who provided compassion and care for him and his loved ones over many years and in his last days of life.

Honoring Norm’s wishes there are no calling hours or public service. A celebration of Norm’s life will be held at a later date, with interment in Grove Mount Cemetery near his parents and other family members.
